Today we’re talking to tenants, specifically to tenants who would like to have a great rental experience and enjoy a good relationship with their landlords or property managers. How can you work with the people you’re renting from to ensure you can stay in the home as long as you’d like, and to establish good landlord references for the future?
We have some ideas.
When you’re renting a Long Beach property, you’re agreeing to follow the terms of your lease and be a good neighbor to the other residents living in your community. Your landlord is responsible for providing a safe and habitable home for you to enjoy.
Being a good tenant may come naturally to you; and today, we’re discussing some of the things that can really make you stand out as the type of resident that landlords and property managers are eager to attract to their properties.
Communicate and Maintain Good Relationships
Most lease agreements are for at least a year, so it’s a good idea to establish a professional and polite relationship with your landlord or property manager. This doesn’t mean you need to become best friends. But you do need to be transparent, responsible, and willing to have open, productive conversations when necessary. Other things that contribute to a good relationship include:
- Communicating promptly. Answer phone calls and return messages.
- Be flexible when maintenance is needed or inspections are scheduled.
- Pay rent on time. Don’t make your landlord chase you down.
A good relationship will not only make your current tenancy better, it will also ensure you get a great reference in the future when you decide to move and you need to rent another home. A good landlord will make an effort to communicate with you proactively and transparently. Return the favor by being honest, accessible, and straightforward.
Be a Good Neighbor to Other Long Beach Tenants
It’s important that you’re considerate when you’re renting a home. No one likes to live next door to noisy neighbors who have no respect for other people. If you have pets, make sure they don’t bark or leave messes outside or in the common areas. Clean up after them and make sure your dog stays leashed. At night, turn your music and your television down so you don’t disrupt the people next door. Treat your neighbors the way you want them to treat you, and everyone will be better off.
Take Care of your Long Beach Rental Property
Do you love where you live? Then, keep it looking great.
While your landlord is responsible for making repairs and maintaining the home, you need to do your part to keep it clean and in good shape. Change light bulbs when they burn out, make sure you’re attentive to the air filters, and always let your landlord or property manager know as soon as there’s a problem that needs attention. Deferred and unreported maintenance issues only end up costing the property owner more in the long term.
Good renters are easy to identify because they’re communicative, responsible, and genuinely concerned about taking care of their home. It’s about much more than paying rent on time.
